APA-Ouagadougou-(Burkina Faso) – The country has been suspended from the pan-African institution since the coup d’Etat in January 2022.
A mission from the African Union’s Peace and Security Council is in Ouagadougou, where it held a working session with the transitional government on Sunday.
The mission aims to “assess the situation in Burkina Faso in all its aspects (security, humanitarian, development),” Burkina Faso’s Foreign minister, Olivia Rouamba said.
The 30-member African Union delegation is led by Ambassador Lamine Thiaw.
“It is our duty to come to Burkina in view of the situation the country is going through, especially the security and humanitarian issues,” the Senegalese diplomat said.
Ms. Rouamba added that this visit “augurs better prospects,” as it is also an opportunity to “work with the country to find appropriate solutions” to lift its suspension from the pan-African institution, a sanction applied since the January 2022 coup d’Etat against President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, followed by another, eight months later
against his successor, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba.
Present in Ouagadougou until Wednesday, the Peace and Security Council mission is due to meet with Captain Ibrahim Traore, the head of government Apollinaire Kyelem de Tambela and the president of the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT), Ousmane Bougma.
