The transitional government, on Thursday, adopted a general mobilization and warning decree.
After obtaining the approval of the Constitutional Council, Captain Ibrahim Traore is stepping up the pace of general mobilization against jihadist groups.
“Faced with the security situation facing Burkina Faso, the salvation of the nation depends on a national surge of all its daughters and sons to find a solution,” Defense Minister Colonel Major Kassoum Coulibaly said.
According to him, the adoption of the decree on general mobilization and warning aims to give the State all the necessary means to deal with the security situation.
It is especially through this decree to give a legal framework to all actions to be implemented to address the situation in Burkina Faso.
On Friday, December 9, 2022, the Head of State sent a letter to the members of the Constitutional Council asking for their opinion. On Thursday, December 15, 2022, they issued a favorable opinion for the issuance of a decree on general mobilization and warning.
The Constitutional Council justified its decision by the “serious threats to the institutions, the independence of the Nation, and the integrity of the national territory” and considered that the conditions were met for the issuance of a decree on general mobilization and warning.
The security situation has deteriorated sharply in recent years, leading to unprecedented political instability, having led to two coups in less than eight months in 2022. In January 2022, Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba carried out a coup against Roch Marc Christian Kabore and was in turn overthrown in September of the same year by Captain Ibrahim Traore, who has since presided over the destiny of Burkina.
However, the military in power is still struggling to find a miracle solution. In 2022 alone, 310 terrorist incidents resulted in 1,135 deaths and 496 injuries, the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) noted in a report released last weekend.
The abuses of armed terrorist groups have displaced nearly two million people.
