Pereira, who previously served as the President of the National Assembly before its dissolution by Umaro Sissoco Embaló in December 2023, addressed a political gathering on Monday, emphasizing the need for solidarity, responsibility, and cohesion among party members. His return comes at a critical time as Guinea Bissau prepares for the upcoming legislative elections amid a politically tense atmosphere.
During the first ordinary meeting of the Central Committee for 2024, Pereira described the moment as “decisive for the future direction of the party.” He urged PAIGC members to foster unity and solidarity, calling on everyone to assume their responsibilities.
“Thank you for this occasion and opportunity. This first ordinary session of the Central Committee in 2024 is crucial for the decisions we must make and the judgments that will follow,” he stated. Pereira encouraged party activists and PAIGC supporters to draw inspiration and determination from this moment.
Addressing internal divisions, he acknowledged the importance of respecting differences but stressed the necessity of overcoming them to strengthen the party. “If we focus too much on our differences, we will lose sight of what is essential: our unity,” he warned. He also recognized the newly elected local councillors and wished them success in their roles.
Pereira highlighted the need to translate the party’s principles into actionable initiatives, citing the National Workers’ Congress as an example of the need to “make the country thrive” while prioritizing stability and social cohesion.
He urged PAIGC members to fully commit to preparations for the November elections, asserting, “It is our responsibility as leaders to make important decisions for the future of our party and our nation.”
