The President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, will travel to France on Wednesday 19 June at the invitation of the Vaccine Alliance (GAVI) and the African Union to participate in the Global Forum on Vaccine Sovereignty and Innovation. This high-level summit, co-organised with Paris, will mark the launch of the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator (AVMA) initiative, according to the Presidency. It will also mark the launch of GAVI’s fundraising campaign for the period 2026-2030.
GAVI plays a critical role in the fight against infectious diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and cholera, the risks of which are exacerbated by climate change. The Alliance also makes a significant contribution to the prevention of cervical cancer in women and girls.
According to GAVI, the meeting will bring together leaders from government, partner organisations, civil society and business from around the world.
At the end of the event, the Senegalese leader will be hosted for lunch by his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron. This will be the first tête-à-tête between Macky Sall’s successor and the French leader since 24 March. Prior to this meeting, Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko received the French ambassador, Christine Pages.
