Nette has been accused of subversive activities by the Beninese authorities who said he was not above reproach in his conduct as a diplomat in Benin.
“Cooperation with the European Union, which is doing very well and will continue to develop, has been a little upset by the activities undertaken by this diplomat who is even involved in activities that we consider subversive,” Spokesman Alain Orounla told reporters in Cotonou on Wednesday.
Orounla who is also Communication minister went on to say: “Nowhere in the world will you see an African diplomat failing in his obligations and his duties. Reciprocity is never established, although abiding by these obligations must be mutual.”
The minister said “the function of an ambassador presupposes a posture and an obligation not only of courtesy vis-à-vis the authorities of the host country but also of reserve.”
Among other reasons for the expulsion, the government of Benin blamed Olivier Nette over his supposed stance on issues related to press freedom and his alleged involvement in the politics of the host country, including meetings with opposition members.
