Opposition party activists stormed the esplanade of Cotonou’s Mathieu Kerekou Stadium in the early morning hours before heading for the Red Star square, the symbolic birthplace of the Beninese revolution located in the heart of the capital.
The disgruntled protesters, drawn from almost all the electoral constituencies across the country, carried banners with messages denouncing the rejection of their political formations of the legislative polls.
“No to exclusion! Everyone in the elections! “,”No election without opposition”,”We demand compliance with ECOWAS regulations”. “Down with injustice!” some of the banners read.
Despite the fact that the CENI considers their candidacy files incomplete, the leaders of the parties demand to be taken into account in the electoral process.
In addition, they demand the consolidation of the democratic gains and the organization of inclusive elections.
Benin is set to hold legislative polls on 28 April.
