The executive secretary of the Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP) wants to chair the National Assembly.
Adama Bictogo has officially entered the race for the presidency of the National Assembly of Cote d’Ivoire. He officially filed his candidacy on Tuesday with the oldest member of the institution, under a strong mobilization of members of the parliamentary group of the Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP, in power). Shortly before, he was received by the MPs of his party in the rotunda room of the National Assembly in a friendly atmosphere.
The MP, Basile Fregbo, congratulated the president of the RHDP, the Ivorian Head of State Alassane Ouattara, who “listens” to the parliamentarians of the ruling party, appealing to all MPs to support the candidacy of Mr. Bictogo.
He said that mathematically, “the RHDP can win the election (of the president of the National Assembly), but we call for a plebiscite” of all the political parties making up the institution.
“I would like my election to be based on the principle of a united Cote d’Ivoire, a united Cote d’Ivoire because what unites us in the Assembly, but in our political mission, is Cote d’Ivoire, our motherland,” Mr. Adama Bictogo told the press.
He also hoped that his candidacy would be “perceived as the candidacy of consensus, of all, of the gathering around an ideal carried by the president of our party, Alassane Ouattara, the Cote d’Ivoire in solidarity.
Adama Bictogo was designated yesterday Monday as the candidate for the election of the President of the Ivorian National Assembly by his political group, at the end of a meeting of RHDP parliamentarians at the party’s headquarters.
The election is scheduled for 7 June. It comes after the death of Amadou Soumahoro on 7 May 2022 following a long illness. He was buried on 13 May 2022 in Séguéla (North), in the privacy of his family.
Elected on 7 March 2019 to head the hemicycle after the resignation of Guillaume Soro, Amadou Soumahoro was re-elected in 2021. During his convalescence, Bictogo was acting speaker.
