US President Joe Biden extended his congratulations to President Cyril Ramaphosa on his recent re-election and the successful formation of South Africa’s government of national unity (GNU), Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said Wednesday.
According to Magwenya, both leaders expressed their mutual commitment to advancing the relationship between the US and South Africa during a telephone conversation on Tuesday evening.
“President Biden pledged that the United States’ will work closely with the 7th administration in South Africa on key areas such as economic growth, job creation, social development and climate change as well as South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 in 2025,” Magwenya said in a statement.
The US leader confirmed that he will visit South Africa and participate in the G20 meetings, Magwenya said.
In response, Ramaphosa extended an invitation to Biden to undertake a state visit to South Africa, aiming to further deepen the relationship between the two countries.
The respective diplomatic teams will work together to finalise the dates for the visit.
South Africa and the US have a long-standing bilateral relationship, marked by diplomatic, economic and cultural cooperation.
Over the years, the two nations have collaborated on various fronts, including trade, investment, education and security.
