The body of the Zambian student Lemekani Nyirenda arrived in Lusaka, three months after he controversially died after being conscripted into the Russian army in its eight-month-long war against Ukraine.
The body of the 23-year-old nuclear engineering student was received by family members and government officials at Lusaka’s Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on Sunday.
It would now undergo forensic pathology at a Lusaka hospital before burial this week, the family said.
Nyirenda, who was serving a nine-year prison term for a drug-related offense, was conscripted into the Russian army in August after receiving a special amnesty on condition that he participates in the war.
He was killed in September, according to Russian officials.
