Botswana has become a target of money laundering and terrorism financing which is channeled through non-profit organisations (NPOs), a cabinet minister said on Wednesday.
Nationality and Immigration Minister Ngaka Ngaka is quoted by the state-run DailyNews as saying that money launderers and terrorism financiers were trying to penetrate the country through NPOs.
The NPOs include non-governmental and faith-based organisations, clubs and burial societies, the minister said.
Ngaka is reported to have told an NPOs meeting in Gaborone that it was disheartening that the most targeted organisations were faith-based, including churches that play an important role in national development and in communities.
He said the government was planning to hold more meetings with NPOs around the country to raise awareness and educate the organisations about the dangers of money laundering and financing terrorism.
