Diplomatic missions based in Botswana’s capital Gaborone have hailed a decision by the country’s High Court to declare unconstitutional a law against same-sex relationships between consenting adults.
A joint statement from the German, French embassies and British High Commission “welcomes the ruling of the Gaborone High Court which found that the Penal Code section criminalising consensual same sex activity unconstitutional.”
The statement congratulates “all lesbuans and gay rights advocates in Botswana on their efforts. Our societies are stronger when they accept, respect and value diversity of individuals and groups.”
The United States embassy in Gaborone said the decision of the High Court “represents a momentous step forward for Botswana’s recognition of the dignity and liberties of every individual citizen and will ensure greater access to health care”.
The US said it will continue to work with Botswana to protect and defend human rights for all and ensuring that all people can fully enjoy fundamental freedoms to which they are entitled.
