Khama recently told the South African Broadcasting Corporation that Botswana intelligence operatives are following Venson-Moitoi “everywhere she goes” as part of punishment for her decision to challenge President Mokgweetsi for leadership of the BDP at the party’s forthcoming elective congress.
DIS public relations officer Edward Robert said Khama’s statement is not only misleading but is designed to cultivate unnecessary fear in the eyes of Batswana and the international community.
He said Venson-Moitoi has not been identified as a threat to national security and “thus there’s no reason for her to be pursued.”
“In fact, the same assurance was recently conveyed to Dr Venson Moitoi by the Director General (Brigadier Peter Magosi),” Robert said.
The former minister, who has the backing of Khama, will be challenging Masisi for the BDP presidency.
