Kebonang reportedly told the High Court on Monday that the money he received from the firm at the centre of the scandal, Capital Management Botswana (CMB), was used to fund Masisi’s then chairmanship campaign during the ruling Botswana Democratic Party congress in 2017.
CMB has been liquidated and is accused of fleecing pensioners millions of US dollars.
Kebonang reportedly further told the court that CMB bosses Tim Marsland and Moitsheki Lekalake met Masisi, who was then Botswana’s Vice President.
According to Kebonang, at that meeting the CMB directors told Masisi that they wanted to donate to his campaign.
It is alleged that Masisi told the CMB executives that if they wanted to donate the funds to his campaign, they must direct the funds to Kebonang himself, who as a member of Masisi’s campaign team, would know how to utilise the funds.
Kebonang said he used the money’s campaign.
This is not the first time that Masisi has been implicated in a financial scandal before court. He was recently accused of having benefitted from a US$25 million that was stolen from the national petroleum fund, a claim which he has since denied.
