Botswana has called on Africa to have a special day dedicated to honouring the victims of slavery, the Dailynews reported here Monday.
The state-run newspaper reported that the southern African nation wants a special day to raise awareness on the issue and inspire people to eliminate modern slavery.
Masisi is said to have made the proposal during a meeting with Senegalese President Macky Sall while on a working visit in Dakar on June 6.
As a remembrance of the heinous crimes against humanity through slave trade, Masisi suggested that Senegal or The Gambia could lead an initiative where the continent would dedicate a day to honour Africans and their descendants whose lives were lost or impacted upon through the slave trade.
The discussions between Masisi and Sall touched on a range of issues from geo-politics, governance and other issues of mutual interest.
“There is a huge scope of collaboration between the two countries and I raised this with our deputy ambassador there to look into those,” Masisi said.
