The Weekend Post reported on its online edition that the legislator who is currently contesting the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) secretary general position has fled the country after a tipoff about a plan to eliminate him.
Guma told the paper that “All I can confirm is that I was tipped by security agents to go for safety.”
He also told the publication he has since informed the Speaker of the National Assembly about the envisaged attempt on his life.
Guma who is the chief campaigner for former Foreign Affairs minister, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi has recently boasted to the local media how confident he was of his team’s victory at the party’s elective congress to be held in April this year.
Venson-Moitoi is challenging President Mokgweetsi Masisi for the party presidency.
Guma who is a wealthy businessman cum- politician also boasted how he intends to splash millions into his campaign to ensure that his team emerges victorious.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that an aspirant for the BDP deputy secretary general’s role, a woman who wants to be Guma’s deputy, councillor Rosiline Panzirah has her office broken into on 18 March and laptops were stolen.
Venson-Moitoi and Panzirah were fired from the ministerial position and BDP Communications team respectively by President Masisi after they announced their intentions to stand for elections.
Guma and Panzirah are currently facing disciplinary hearings after they allegedly convened a meeting that was not sanctioned by the party.
They have since denied the charges, saying the meeting was part of their campaigns.
