Opposition parties in Botswana are set to lodge a challenge against the results of the October 23 election in the High Court after complaining that the vote was rigged, APA can reveal on Wednesday.
The president of the Botswana Patriotic Front (BFP) told reporters during a press briefing in the capital Gaborone that his party and other opposition are current preparing court papers to dispute the outcome of the general elections.
The BDP won the election, with 38 seats, followed by the UDC with 25, Botswana Patriotic Front with three and the Alliance for Progressives with one, in the 57 seat parliament.
Butale said the BPF and other opposition parties believe that there were irregularities, which benefited the BDP.
“For instance, when you look at the voting pattern specially the margin in the southern part of the country it’s shocking. Never before has the ruling party win with a margin of more than 3000 in Gaborone which a cosmopolitan area. There was massive rigging during the general elections,” he said.
The UDC has since announced that is probing some of the information in its possession and is expected to map the way forward in due course.
On the other hand, the BDP has since described as false accusations by the opposition that the elections were rigged.
