Botswana’s main opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) has reported the country’s intelligence chief Peter Magosi to the Ombudsman for alleged acts of maladministration and abuse of office, APA learnt here Monday.
In a letter to the Ombudsman seen by APA on Monday, UDC said it is concerned that the head of the Directorate of Intelligence and Security “has overstepped his security functions and crossed into political landscape.”
“His overzealous bodyguard behaviour, seemingly to impress his political appointer, has left many Batswana puzzled by the state of affairs,” the party said.
It said as a civil servant Magosi should “adhere to appropriate procedure and high ethical standards” in discharging his official duties without political pressure and interference.
The UDC cited a press interview in which Magosi was quoted as saying he was mediating between President Mokgweetsi Masisi and former president Ian Khama following a fallout between the two men.
It said Magosi has been visible in activities of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party performing protocol duties for the party’s leaders.
