APA-Gaborone (Botswana) Botswana’s 800-meter sprinter Nijel Amos has been slapped with a three-year ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after testing positive for a banned substance.
The AIU announced Wednesday that the 2012 Olympic silver medalist would not be allowed to compete in athletics until July 2025 as the ban took into account the 10 months that the athlete has been on suspension.
“The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has banned Nijel Amos for three years, from 12 July 2022 – the date of his provisional suspension – until 11 July 2025, for breaching the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules,” the anti-doping agency said.
Amos tested positive for metabolites during an out-of-competition urine test in June 2022 and was provisionally suspended a month later.
According to the AIU, results of any athletics meetings where Amos participated “on and since 4 June 2022 have been disqualified”.
The agency said Amos admitted to the doping charges and, therefore, got a one-year reduction on the standard four-year ban normally imposed on doping violators.
The ban rules the star athlete out of next year’s Paris Olympic Games.
