In a report handed over to President Mokgweetsi Masisi on Thursday, the committee recommended that Recommendations to be lifted, develop a legal framework that will create an enabling environment for the growth of safari hunting industry.
The committee proposed that Botswana should manage the population of elephant within its historic range. It also recommended that the department of wildlife should undertake an effective outreach programme within the elephant range to reduce human/wildlife conflict.
The committee salsa proposed that Botswana should strategically place human/wildlife conflict fences to be constructed in few hotspot areas and game ranches be demarcated to serve as buffers between communal and wildlife areas.
The commended recommended that wildlife migration routes not beneficial to country’s conservation efforts be closed.
It also recommended that regular but limited elephant culling be introduced; establishment of elephant meat canning including production of petty food and processing into other by-products from culled elephants. Masisi said white paper will follow and shared with the public.
The hunting ban was introduced by former President Ian Khama’s administration in 2014.
