Public schools around Botswana’s capital Gaborone will reopen for non-examination classes on Tuesday, a government official has announced.
Ministry of Basic Education spokesperson Mmantlo Kgamanyane said government schools would resume lessons on 1 September for learners in “Standards 1 to 6, and Forms 1,2 and 4”.
“The Ministry of Basic Education seeks to remind parents, teachers, pupils and all relevant stakeholders that non-completing classes in government/public schools in Greater Gaborone zone will resume classes on 1 September 2020,” Kgamanyane said in a statement on Monday.
The country reopened public schools for examination-sitting classes in June after a seven-week closure following a coronavirus lockdown that began in April.
She however said “pre-primary classes and learners with profound and multiple disabilities countrywide will remain at home until further notice.”
Strictly adherence to COVID-19 health protocols such as maintaining social distancing and regular washing of hands “will be mandatory in order to ensure the schools remain safe for both learners and staff”, the official said.
