During a recent visit to Rabat, the President of the Brazilian Federal Senate, Rodrigo Otávio Soares Pacheco, met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, where they discussed bilateral relations and the Sahara issue.
Pacheco emphasized Brazil’s alignment with Morocco’s position, stating, “I am also aware of the seriousness with which Morocco addresses the Sahara issue, which leads Brazil to adopt an official position on this matter.” This stance aligns with Brazil’s previous recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces and rejection of the separatist claims made by the Polisario Front.
The Moroccan government has consistently garnered international support for its autonomy plan, which offers a framework for self-governance within Moroccan sovereignty. This growing recognition, as highlighted by King Mohammed VI, underscores the legitimacy of Morocco’s approach.
Beyond the Sahara issue, Brazil and Morocco explored opportunities to strengthen their bilateral ties in various sectors, including defense, maritime transport, and trade. The two nations also discussed their shared challenges in areas such as climate change and environmental protection.
The visit concluded with a positive outlook for deepening bilateral relations, including the announcement of a direct flight between Casablanca and São Paulo scheduled for December of this year. This new air link is expected to facilitate greater integration and cooperation between the two countries.
