The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been knocked out of the 2023 Women’s World Cup by the Lionesses of England, the European champions, through penalty shootout which ended 4-2 in favour of England.
The match played on Monday in Brisbane, Australia saw the Super Falcons throw away many scoring chances than their opponents and had three goal bound balls hit the woodwork during the match that was taken to extra-time before the penalty shootout after the extra-time period could not produce the winner.
England converted four of their penalties, while Nigeria could only convert two during the shootout.
Although England ended the match with 10 players when Lauren James was red-carded for stamping her foot on Alozie in the second half of the game, Nigeria failed to take advantage of playing 11 against 10 players to win the game.
With the knockout of Nigeria by England on Monday, Morocco, which will take on France in the next round of the knockout stage of the tournament, is the only surviving African team.
The Zambian team was the first to be eliminated in the group stage, while South Africa lost 0-2 to The Netherlands in the knockout stage.
