APA – Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) – The government said drugs have been found in jihadist bases.
Burkina Faso celebrated the 36th International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Monday, APA can report.
On this occasion, 33.26 tonnes of drugs seized since the beginning of the year were destroyed. These included “1,085 grams of cannabis, 20 grams of heroin, 100 kg of adulterated alcohol, 160 kg of hookah products and 31 tonnes of prohibited products,” said Mahamoudou Sana, Minister Delegate for Security.
He condemned the proliferation of drugs in the country in the context of the fight against armed jihadist groups.
In 2022 alone, nearly 241 tonnes of drugs were seized and 279 people arrested and referred to the public prosecutor, according to the Permanent Secretariat for the Fight against Drugs.
According to the Minister Delegate for Security, drugs contribute to the exacerbation of jihadist violence.
“Drugs are found in many of the terrorist bases that have been destroyed, because these individuals sometimes take drugs to cause damage,” he said.
The government has announced a series of meetings to draw up a national reference framework for the fight against drugs.
