In a third statement issued on Sunday, October 2, 2022, ECOWAS indicates that it has been following with “concern” the evolution of the situation in Burkina Faso since September 30, 2022.
The current Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), General Umaro Sissoco Emballo, President of Guinea-Bissau, commends the various parties in Burkina Faso “for having accepted a peaceful settlement of their differences.”
“I take particular note of the decision of Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba to resign as President of the transitional government of Burkina Faso, in order to avoid a violent confrontation and a possible bloodbath,” he said.
He invited the people to “settle their differences through dialogue and not through violence.”
The current ECOWAS Chairman demands that the Burkinabe authorities respect the commitment made with the sub-regional institution.
At the July 3, 2022 Summit, the Heads of State of the regional body adopted a timetable that provides for a return to constitutional order by July 1, 2024.
President Embalo announced the arrival of a delegation from ECOWAS, led by himself, on Monday, October 3, 2022, in Ouagadougou.
This delegation will be composed of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guinea-Bissau, Suzi Carlo Barbosa, the ECOWAS Mediator for the country, Mahamoudou ISSOUFOU and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray.
