President of Burkina Faso’s Transitional Legislative Assembly, Ousmane Bougouma has called for international support for crises in the Sahel region.
Speaking during the Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit on Palestine and Lebanon in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh, Bougouma called on the international community to show as much interest in the Alliance of Sahel States as in the Palestinian and Lebanese crises.
“The situation in Palestine and Lebanon is reminiscent of Burkina Faso or the countries of the Alliance of Sahel States, which are plagued by terrorist acts,” Bougouma said.
He added: “We hope that the international mobilisation for Palestine and Lebanon can also be observed in favour of the Sahelian cause so that peace can return.”
The high-level summit, organised by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League, discussed the situation in Palestine and Lebanon, in particular the Israeli-Palestinian conflict which has seen recurrent attacks by the Israeli army on the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon.
The meeting expressed the need to support peace efforts, with a declaration calling for the liberation of the occupied territories, an immediate ceasefire, the lifting of the blockade of Gaza to allow the entry of humanitarian aid convoys, and the organization of an international peace conference.
