The relations between Burkina Faso and Mali have been good since Captain Ibrahim Traoré came to power. Mali’s President, Col. Assimi Goïta, will pay a friendly working visit to Ouagadougou on Tuesday, June, 25, the Presidency of the Republic of Burkina Faso announced on Monday.
During his first official visit to Burkina Faso, President Goïta will hold talks with his Burkinabe counterpart, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, on the “excellent relations of cooperation” between Bamako and Ouagadougou.
Colonel Goïta and Captain Traoré “will discuss in particular the challenges in the fight against terrorism and those linked to socio-economic development and the quest for total sovereignty in their respective countries,” according to the Burkina Faso presidency.
The Ouagadougou-Bamako axis has been in good health since Captain Ibrahim Traoré took power in Burkina Faso in September, following a coup d’état. His first official visit was to Mali.
Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali created the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in mid-September 2023 to “pool their efforts and energies to liberate their territory from the forces of evil,” according to the Burkina Faso presidency.
“This meeting of the two Heads of State of ESA member countries will also be an opportunity to strengthen the alliance for the benefit of the peoples of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger,” the same source said.
On March 7, 2024, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso took a further step in their rapprochement by announcing the creation of a joint military force to combat armed terrorist groups.
The three countries said they wanted to create a federation free from Western control.
