APA – Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) The ‘Groupements d’unités mobiles d’intervention’ (Mobile Response Unit Groups, GUMI) are now officially part of the Burkina Faso national police force.
On Wednesday, the transitional government adopted a decree creating the ‘Groupements d’unités mobiles d’interventions’ (GUMI).
These are elite units of the national police force, tasked with “combating all forms of threat, principally terrorism and organised crime, in their areas of operation.”
The adoption of this decree makes it possible to regularise the legal situation and improve the working and living conditions of the members of the GUMI, the Deputy Minister in charge of security and Divisional Police Commissioner, Mahamadou Sana explained
“This decree aims to give legal existence to the GUMIs (…), deployed in the regions and localities facing major security challenges in Burkina Faso,” reads the minutes of the Council of Ministers.
The GUMIs whose number is currently 10, have been in existence since 2021.
