APA – Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) – The head of the transitional government announced Friday that the country plans to increase its energy capacity.
“Negotiations are continuing with the Islamic Republic of Iran for the construction of an oil refinery,” Prime Minister Apolinaire Kyelem told the members of the parliament.
He added that a memorandum of understanding had also been signed with Ghana for the construction of a multi-product pipeline to supply Burkina Faso with hydrocarbons.
Last October, Ouagadougou and Moscow reached a deal for the construction of a nuclear power plant.
The head of government noted that these initiatives are designed to make up for lost time in electricity production and increase the country’s energy capacity.
In addition, the country will increase its use of photovoltaic energy.
The government will also reactivate the Noumbiel hydroelectric dam project.
“This will be an asset, not only for electricity, but also for agriculture and water supply,” Kyelem said.
Burkina Faso’s generation fleet includes thermal power plants with a capacity of 206,318 MW, hydroelectric power plants with a capacity of 35.9 MVA, and private thermal power plants with a capacity of 68,434 MW.
