The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, painted a grim picture of Burkina Faso’s situation following talks with the transitional government.
Security Crisis and Civilian Toll
Türk characterized the security situation as “more than alarming,” with vast areas terrorized by armed groups.
UN records from 2023 detail over 1,300 human rights violations with nearly 3,800 civilian victims.
Over 86% of these atrocities were attributed to armed terrorist groups.
Abuses by Security Forces
The UN Human Rights Office also raised concerns about “serious violations” committed by security forces and pro-government militias.
Türk emphasized the need for “thorough investigations” and accountability for perpetrators.
Humanitarian Catastrophe
The security crisis has fueled a humanitarian emergency.
An estimated 2.3 million people are food insecure, over 2 million are displaced, and more than 800,000 children lack schooling. In total, 6.3 million Burkinabe require humanitarian assistance.
International Neglect
Türk lamented the dwindling international attention and inadequate resources to address the crisis.
The UN High Commissioner urged the government to prioritize civilian protection and work towards a new social contract with inclusive participation from all citizens.
Burkina Faso desperately needs international support to tackle the security crisis and alleviate the suffering of its people.
