This visit is the second of its king by a president of the sub-region, after that of Beninese Patrice Talon.
The Ghanaian President arrived this Wednesday afternoon in the capital of Burkina Faso for “a visit of friendship and work,” reported the Directorate of Communication of the Presidency of Faso, without specifying the duration of the stay.
Nana Akufo-Addo was welcomed at the international airport of Ouagadougou by the President of the Transition, Captain Ibrahim Traore, added its communicators.
This is the second official visit of a democratically elected president to Captain Ibrahim Traore, after that of Beninese President Patrice Talon.
“The two heads of state discussed major issues in the sub-region, which is facing a security challenge,” said a statement issued by the Presidency of Faso.
Militants from jihadi groups are rampant on the borders between the two countries. According to observers, the jihadists use western Burkina as a rear base to cause abuses in neighboring Ghana and to retreat.
They said the visit could allow the leaders to pool their armed forces to better protect the borders and fight non-state armed groups.
The Presidency of Faso said that Presidents Akufo-Addo and Traore also exchanged views on issues of common interest to the people of Burkina Faso and Ghana.
Forgetting the episode of Wagner’s alleged presence in Burkina
According to political analysts, this visit by Nana Akufo-Addo will also “definitively dissipate” the diplomatic row of December 2022, after the Ghanaian president had claimed that Burkina had called on the private Russian paramilitary company, Wagner, for a mine in the south of the country.
The government of Burkina Faso “disapproved” of his remarks before summoning Accra’s ambassador to Ouagadougou and recalling its diplomat to Accra. Akufo-Addo then sent a government delegation to the
transitional authorities.
