APA – Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) – For ten years running, Burkina Faso has witnessed relentless incursions by jihadist groups.
On Tuesday, Captain Ibrahim Traoré reaffirmed his determination to defeat them despite the intensification of attacks.
“We are well aware of the current situation, which is why the attacks have intensified,” the head of state said, in reference to the multiple raids by insurgents in recent weeks.
“There is not a single attack or incident that we are not aware of,” he claimed.
According to Captain Traoré, this intensification is linked to the rainy season, which makes troop mobility “a bit complicated.”
“The enemy also knows that during this rainy season, attacks have to be intensified. So it’s going to be difficult for us, but we have to persevere. It’s very important,” he explained.
The president of the transitional government, Captain Traoré, described the increase in attacks on unarmed civilians as cowardly.
For him, it is also an admission of powerlessness and desperation on the part of the attackers.
It proves that the path (of sovereignty, editor’s note) taken by Burkina Faso is an unpleasant one.
According to an APA account, more than 70 security incidents were reported in the country in June alone, with 49 cases in the last ten days of the same month.
“But if there’s one thing we can assure you of, it’s that we will never be discouraged. We are convinced of one thing: we will defeat terrorism,” Captain Ibrahim Traoré vowed.
For the past eight years, the country has been the target of attacks by armed groups.
The Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSIM), linked to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), is responsible for most of the security incidents.
In January 2022, the military overthrew Roch Marc Kaboré, the country’s first democratically elected civilian leader, who was deemed incapable of resolving the security crisis.
In September, the young Captain Ibrahim Traoré, below 40 years of age, seized power from Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba for the same reasons, but has so far failed to improve the security situation.
