APA-Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) The military junta in Burkina Faso has announced thwarting an attempted coup and arresting and detaining its suspected ringleaders.
“A proven coup attempt was foiled on September 26, 2023 by the Burkinabe intelligence and security services,” the transitional government said in a statement on Wednesday.
“At present, officers and other alleged actors involved in this attempt at destabilisation have been arrested and others actively pursued” the statement added.
The government explained that the authors of the abortive coup “were driven by interests at odds with the reclaiming the rest of the country blighted by an insurgency.
It accused the plotter of orchestrating a plan to “attack the institutions of the Republic and precipitate chaos”.
The authorities said they regretted that “officers whose oath is to defend the homeland have erred in an enterprise of such a nature which aims to hinder the march of the Burkinabé people to regain their sovereignty and their total liberation from terrorists who are trying to enslave them”.
The government called on the population to be vigilant and reassured the public that “ongoing investigations will make it possible to unmask all instigators of this plot”.
Bringing the transition to its logical conclusion
Several demonstrators invaded the United Nations roundabout on Tuesday evening, following rumours of an attempted putsch against Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
The junta head vowed on Wednesday to bring the Burkinabè transition to its desired conclusion, a day after demonstrations of support, following the attempted coup against his regime.
“I am reassured of my determination to lead the transition successfully despite adversity and the various manoeuvres to stop our inexorable march towards assumed sovereignty,” Captain Traoré said on his page X (formerly Twitter) Information about the attempted destabilisation by a section of the military and their supporters.
On September 8, the Military Prosecutor indicated that soldiers had been arrested for attempting to destabilise the current regime.
At the end of August, the Minister of Security warned of the presence of “foreigners” in Burkina Faso whose aim is to sow the seeds of chaos alongside their local accomplices.
