The armed forces of Burkina Faso and Mali announced on Friday April 21 that they had launched a joint operation to combat insecurity.
The military operation is called Kapidgou 2 and is taking place in the Boucle du Mouhoun region of Burkina Faso, up to the Malian border, according to Burkinabe military sources.
On the Ouagadougou side, more than 800 soldiers and their civilian auxiliaries have been mobilised for the operation. In Bamako, “several units of the armed forces have been deployed,” without giving further details.
According to the communications department of the Malian armed forces, the operation aims to increase the pressure on jihadist groups along the Mali-Burkina border.
“The armed groups are now trapped between two waves of fire that will force them to abandon their plans,” it added.
At the end of the operation, officials promised a significant reduction in insecurity and the return of the population and administration to the area.
The border between the two countries stretches for more than 1,000 kilometres and is a sanctuary for Armed Terrorist Groups.
