APA – Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) – The Prime Minister of the transition has denounced the mismanagement of the army between 2016 and 2021 and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice.
“We have audited the army’s budget since 2016 (…). Irregularities have been detected,” said the acting State Comptroller General, Urbain Millogo, on Monday, during the presentation to the head of government of the General Activity Report 2022 of the Superior Authority for State Control and the Fight against Corruption (ASCE-LC).
“For the purchase of the weapons, the state collaborated with a dealer. Contracts for the purchase of weapons were also awarded to several companies belonging to the same person,” said Mr. Millogo.
On the basis of these facts, the Prime Minister, Apollinaire Kyelem de Tambèla, asked the Comptroller General to refer the matter to the courts so that the accused could justify any “unfounded and unjustified expenditure” by the army.
“Those who gave the arms contract to a trafficker must answer, because you can’t give a contract to someone who isn’t qualified to carry it out. We are not happy with the way the army has been managed,” the Prime Minister said.
The report adds that the army does not have an accountant for fuel management. The State Comptroller General is therefore urging the army to remedy the situation.
The audit of financial and accounting management, fiscal year 2022, covered 21 ministries and institutions.
Fiscal years 2020 and 2021 were under review.
