This is a rare event, if not a first. In Burkina Faso, the head of the junta, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, will not take the oath of office for the additional five years granted to him following national dialogue, the countdown to which begins this Tuesday. The Burkina new agency (AIB) announced this on Monday, July 1, citing Justice Minister, Rodrigue Bayala.
On May 25, Captain Ibrahim Traoré was given another five years to lead the country after he took power in a coup d’état in September 2022.
For this five-year term, which will take effect on July 2, 2024, “there will be no new swearing in of the president of Faso,” Bayala announced.
In the new transitional charter, Captain Ibrahim Traoré is referred to as President of the Republic and is eligible for the presidential elections to be organized at the end of the transitional period.
