APA – Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) – The father of the August 1983 revolution has been awarded a new official distinction by the Burkinabe authorities.
On Wednesday, Captain Thomas Sankara was elevated to the rank of “Hero of the Nation.”
The transitional government recognized the father of the Burkinabe revolution “for having left his mark on the history and progress” of the country.
“This recognition follows the adoption in June 2022 of the law establishing the status of Hero of the Nation and the decree creating the National Commission for the Analysis and Follow-up of the Files of Heroes, Martyrs and Invalids of the Nation,” explained the government spokesman.
Jean-Emmanuel pointed out that the technical committee convened for this purpose considered that the case of the late Captain Sankara met all the criteria.
A young Burkinabe captain who took power in 1983 at the age of 33, Thomas Sankara is a pan-African icon. His anti-imperialist and revolutionary discourse continues to inspire many generations, more than three decades after his death in 1987 during a coup that brought to power Blaise Compaoré, himself forced into exile in the Ivory Coast since 2014 following a popular uprising.
