A dark cloud engulfed eSwatini football after a player of Burundian origin died on the field during the MTN League on Thursday.
Papy Faty was a Malanti Chiefs player, and his team were playing against Green Mamba in Pigg’s Peak when he suddenly collapsed on the field.
He was rushed to the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital where he was certified dead.
The incident happened during the first half when Faty’s team was losing 3-0.
The game went on after he was rushed to hospital but had to be abandoned when news of his death were conveyed shortly after the second half began.
Faty once played for Bidvest Wits in the South African Premier Soccer League, which he joined after leaving Burundi where he had played for the national football team.
