APA-Yaoundé (Cameroon) – In an open conflict with the Ministry of Sports, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) on Tuesday sacked national team coach Marc Brys.
Football in Cameroon is once again in crisis. The president of the football association, Samuel Eto’o, decided on Tuesday 21 May to suspend “with immediate effect” the contract of “the staff of the Indomitable Lions led by Mr. Marc Brys.”
The Belgian manager was appointed by the Ministry of Sports on 3rd April following a major dispute with FECAFOOT, led by Eto’o, a former national football star who enjoyed a successful career with FC Barcelona in the Spanish top flight.
Faced with a decision taken without his consent, Eto’o attempted to thwart the Belgian’s appointment by appointing his own men among the Indomitable Lions’ coaching staff.
However, the Conciliation and Arbitration Committee of the Cameroon National Olympic Committee (CNOSC) disagreed and decided to suspend the president’s appointments.
In response to the CNOSC’s ruling, FECAFOOT decided to part ways with Marc Brys and his staff, who were appointed by the Ministry of Sport.
The Belgian coach has yet to take charge of the five-time African champions, with a new international window opening in early June as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
In a statement, FECAFOOT described the move as “the direct consequence of decisions taken by the Cameroonian sporting authorities in violation of all legal and regulatory provisions”. It is feared that the ministerial authority will not reverse this decision, which could have serious consequences if FECAFOOT lodges a complaint with Fifa, world football’s governing body, which prohibits political interference in football.
“FECAFOOT reserves the right to refer these decisions to FIFA as they will hamper preparations for the forthcoming sporting events,” warned the federation, which is determined to do everything in its power to reassert its authority over Cameroonian football, which has been going through difficult times in recent years.
