UN peacekeepers have forced militiamen of the Unity for Peace in the Central African Republic (UPC) out of the southern town of Boyo, APA learnt on Tuesday.
The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (UNMISCA) is reportedly winning an important battle against armed groups that terrorize civilians.
“The peacekeepers of the UNMISCA initiated, on December 25, 2021, an operation to expel about 200 elements of the Unit for Peace in the Central African Republic (UPC) from the locality of Boyo, in the prefecture of Ouaka,” a statement to APA claimed.
UNMISCA said the mission was part of so-called clean-up operations using regular patrols of trouble spots.
The peacekeepers said they were able to dislodge the UPC thanks in large part to the involvement of Nepalese and Mauritanian battalions in the operations.
Prior to the operations UPC fighters had occupied homes as well as the mayor’s residence in Boyo” according to the UNMISCA.
This town had witnessed sporadic attacks on December 6 and 7, 2021, which left 15 civilians killed and nearly 1,500 more displaced.
