Before the adoption of the new code, MPs will discuss with the administrations involved in the implementation of the document, which contains several innovations including the introduction of two types of elections.
Thus, for the legislative elections, there will be a first-past-the-post, two-round and list-based election in areas with several constituencies. For the other zones, a two-round single-member constituency election is planned.
In the former electoral code, all legislative elections were held on the basis of a first-past-the-post two-round election.
The deposits paid to the public treasury by candidates should also increase in the new code, from 100,000 CFA francs to 1,000,000 CFA francs for each candidate wishing to run for legislative elections.
For the presidential election, it increases from 5 million to 50 million CFA francs for each candidate.
In addition, candidates for election must have a discharge, the release of which will be made after an investigation of morality which will establish that they have not committed any crime or misappropriation.
