APA-Johannesburg (South Africa) Cathay Pacific Airways resumed direct flights between Hong Kong and South Africa’s Johannesburg on Wednesday, three years after the airline was forced to suspend service at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020.
The Hong Kong-based carrier said it would continue with the previous arrangement when it used to operate three weekly flights between OR Tambo International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport before the COVID disruption.
It is also considering starting up three weekly direct flights between Hong Kong and Cape Town as well as a weekly flight to Durban.
The plan is to eventually have 11 flights a week between South Africa and Hong Kong, with daily service into Johannesburg.
The resumption of Cathay Pacific’s direct flights is expected to offer travellers greater choice and flexibility as they commute between southern Africa and Asia.
