The election of the new speaker of the National Assembly in Cote d’Ivoire for the 2021-2025 legislature is set for Tuesday followed by the solemn opening of the first ordinary session on 1 April 2021, the institution’s secretary general, Alain Acakpo-Addra, told the press on Monday.
Out of 255 MPs in the Ivorian National Assembly, 249 will participate in the inaugural session on 30 March 2021 and the formal opening of the first ordinary session, as six seats are not yet filled, Mr. Alain Acakpo-Addra said.
During the inaugural session, the election of the new President of the National Assembly will take place. The President of the National Assembly is elected for the duration of the legislature by secret uninominal ballot by an absolute majority of the deputies present in the first round.
If absolute majority is not obtained in the first round, only the two candidates with the most votes are elected in a second round, which takes place no later than 15 days after the first round.
Once completed, this election will mark the constitution of the new National Assembly. The new speaker will then convene the solemn opening ceremony of the ordinary session, which will run from 1 April to 31 December 2021.
