In a statement on Monday, Deby described the attempted coup as absurd.
“It is with outrage that the President of the Republic of Chad, President-in-Office of CEMAC, Idriss Déby Itno has heard about the actions of a handful of soldiers who attempted this morning to destabilize the institutions of the Gabonese Republic”, a statement by the bloc said.
While condemning the insurrection, President Deby said “any unconstitutional change or takeover of power by arms is an absurdity and a violation of the founding principles of the African Union”.
He hailed the “prompt reaction of the loyal elements of the Gabonese defense and security forces who foiled the subversive attempt”.
Deby said CEMAC is heartened by the chorus of unequivocal condemnation that greeted the coup from the international community.
CEMAC reaffirmed its support for Gabon, a member of the bloc, its President Ali Bongo Ondimba and the Gabonese people.
