Launched six months ago, the free delivery of national identity cards will come to an end on May 31, 2023. More than a million Chadian citizens have benefited from this free service. To achieve this result, the government has increased the number of enrolment sites in the provinces.
This measure only concerns the issuing of national identity cards
Satisfied with this result, Transitional President Mahamat Idriss Deby decided to extend the measure for another two months. According to the Head of State, this was to “enable citizens in remote areas and those who have not yet registered to benefit from the free delivery of identity documents.”
Since 2021, thanks to the creation of the ‘Agence Nationale des Titres Securises’ (National Agency for Secured Documents, ANATS), Chad has been producing identity documents with biometrics. There is a charge for issuing national identity cards and passports. Officially, the fee for an identity card is 5,000 CFA francs, and 60,000 CFA francs for a passport.
However, in order to obtain these documents within a reasonable timeframe, applicants are obliged to use the services of intermediaries and to pay more than these amounts.
