APA-Ndjamena (Chad) Under the theme “Women and political transitions in Africa,” this round table, initiated by the Chadian Ministry for Women, brings together leading women from Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Gabon.
The overall aim of the round table is to contribute to strengthening transformative political governance in Africa based on equality and equity between men and women. Specific objectives include raising awareness of the crucial role played by women in political transitions, examining best practices and challenges, and mobilising
support for issues related to UN Security Council Resolution 1325.
According to the terms of reference, this crucial event is taking place at a time when the countries of the Sahel region are facing major security and political challenges that are adversely affecting the conditions of women.
This particularly important meeting provides an essential platform for discussing the challenges and opportunities facing women in periods of political transition in Africa,” said Amina Priscille Longoh, Chad’s Minister of State and Minister for Women. She expressed her wish to share with her African sisters the successes of the transition in Chad and the role played by Chadian women in this process.
The expected outcomes of this high-level forum are a better understanding of the security context and its impact, an enriching the sharing of best practices and initiatives for peace, and the formulation of concrete recommendations for improving the participation of women in the political and social life of countries in transition.
The roundtable will take place over three days and will include contributions from the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, and the women’s ministers of Burkina Faso, Chad, Gabon,
Guinea, Mali and Niger.
In his opening speech at the event, Chad’s transitional president, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, acknowledged the importance of women in maintaining peace and stability in society.
He encouraged the women attending the conference to continue to play this role to the full.
“Your work will contribute to strengthening innovative political governance in Africa, based on equality and equity, but also to making visible the crucial role you play in political transitions,” he declared.
