Initially scheduled for May 10, the inclusive national dialogue in Chad has been postponed to a “later” date, reports said on Tuesday. .
This decision was taken on the request of the Chadian government’s partners including Qatar, mediator in this pre-dialogue.
The talks launched on March 13 in Doha between representatives of the Chadian government and several rebel groups have been stalled for several weeks. And one of the country’s most powerful rebel groups, the Military Command Council for the Salvation of the Republic (CCMSR), even walked out in early April.
In a statement, the Chadian Foreign Ministry did not give a new timetable, but it did mention an “agreement by the highest authorities of the transition to postpone the inclusive national dialogue to a later date to be set after consultations with the relevant institutions and political actors.”
Transition in turmoil
Following the death of Idriss Deby Itno on April 20, 2021, his successor Mahamat Idriss Deby, who was installed as president of Chad’s Transitional Military Council (TMC), began extensive consultations with rebel groups. These consultations should lead to a handover of power to civilians at the end of the next elections, the date of which has not yet been set.
The transition announced after his power grab should lead to the organization of “free and democratic elections” at the end of the inclusive national dialogue (DNI). This postponement could lead to a change in the timetable of the transition.
