APA – N’Djamena (Chad) – This outage, which lasted almost seven hours, is the second in Chad in five days.
Chad has once again suffered an internet blackout. In the early hours of 5th June, internet access was cut across the country. Only institutions and individuals with Starlink equipment maintained access to the internet during the blackout.
The interruption, which lasted almost seven hours, is the second in five days. Internet access was cut off on the evening of 1 June.
According to Safitel Chad, the company that manages the fibre-optic network, the interruption was caused by faults in the fibre-optic cable from Cameroon.
Chad is connected to the Internet via fibre-optic cables from Cameroon and Sudan. Since 2016, the country has experienced recurrent internet outages.
”This is either for reasons of national security, or because of breakdowns in the fibre optic cables. The internet in Chad has become like electricity. You never know when it’s going to be cut off,” said one internet user.
With a penetration rate of 17.9%, Chad ranks 4th in sub-Saharan Africa, according to Data Reportal. In the sub-region, Chad is one of the countries where the cost of Internet access remains high.
A Giga connection costs 550 francs per day.
