Chad has officially launched its Independent Authority for the Fight against Corruption (AILC), a body established by Ordinance 007/PR/2023 of August 1, 2023, following recommendations from the 2022 inclusive and sovereign national dialogue. The newly appointed general controllers of the AILC were sworn in on Wednesday at the Presidential Palace in a ceremony led by the President of the Supreme Court, Samir Adam Annour, and attended by Head of State, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.
Ousmane Abderaman Djougourou and Fatimé Abdelkerim Soumaila took the oath, pledging loyalty, integrity, and commitment to the nation’s best interests, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of December 27, 2023.
The fight against corruption is a stated priority for the Chadian government. However, Chad’s ranking of 162 out of 180 countries in Transparency International’s 2023 Corruption Perception Index highlights the significant challenges that remain. While President Déby has pledged firm action against corruption, recent financial scandals involving high-ranking officials have raised questions about the government’s true commitment to tackling this issue. The effectiveness of the newly inaugurated AILC will be closely watched as it attempts to address this pervasive problem.
