The Chadian government, on Wednesday set up a commission mainly responsible for recovering weapons in the illegal possession of civilians.
The measure has been introduced in the wake of deadly clashes between farmers and nomadic pastoralists in the country’s eastern provinces of Ouaddai and Sila.
Consisting of gamekeepers, the national gendarmerie and the armed forces, this commission is under the command of two senior officers.
It will confiscate and collect any unlicensed weapons held by civilians.
“The joint force is working to collect from citizens, all weapons held without authorization and to present them to the court that will punish offenders, in accordance with the decision signed by the Minister of State and Minister Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic,” the decree instituting the commission reads.
