The president of the transition has called on “politico-military groups, still sceptical, to reconsider their position” on the inclusive national dialogue.
The President of the Transitional Military Council, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno addressed the Chadians Wednesday evening, on the eve of the 62nd anniversary of the country’s accession to international sovereignty. A festive moment that does not hide the internal political dissensions, against a backdrop of armed struggles, which led in April 2021 to the murder of the incumbent president, Idriss Déby Itno, while he was away fighting the rebels in the north of the country.
Today, his son, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, is back in power and trying to bring peace. Last Monday, in Doha, Qatar, where talks were held with rebel groups, he obtained the signatures of about forty of them with a view to their participation in the “inclusive national dialogue”, scheduled for 20 August in N’Djamena, the capital. Some factions, such as the Front for Alternance and Concord (FACT), which was responsible for the death of his father at the front, have refused to take part. But Mahamat Idriss Déby does not despair. He launched a new appeal to them to get Chad out of its decades of internal struggles.
“Today, more than ever, we will face our responsibility before history. The responsibility to talk about issues long avoided or considered taboo. The responsibility to take difficult decisions to finally write together the most beautiful page of Chad’s history. Once again, I sincerely appeal to our politico-military brothers, who are still sceptical, to reconsider their position, in order to seize this historic opportunity for a new beginning for our dear and beautiful country,” said the leader, who hopes, through this discussion, to allow the return to constitutional order.
He also reassured about the sovereignty of the national dialogue, promising that no subject will be left out. “All issues of national interest will be put on the dialogue table. In this regard and in accordance with my previous statements on the sovereignty of the inclusive national dialogue, we will, in the coming days, take an act that will officially enshrine the sovereignty of the inclusive national dialogue whose resolutions will be enforceable,” said the young general whose father led Chad for 30 years.
